Member Challenge - LED Time

Member Challenge

Link the LEDs on our clock to our public Calendar

MakeFixHack has a new clock which we’ve outfitted with LEDs and a micro controller!

We’re looking for somebody to use the wLED firmware to connect the clock to our public calendar and use the LEDs to provide calendar information.

To that end, we're hosting our first "Member Challenge!"

What is a Member Challenge?

A Member Challenge lets our community help us out with something we would like to see done. It's a great way to either show off your existing skills or to stretch yourself and explore something new.

We'll provide you with details (below) and you'll provide us with a solution. Anybody can enter.

The Board of Directors will pick a winning solution and award somebody with a free month of membership!

Details

Here's what your solution needs to do to be considered:
  • No hardware or firmware changes

  • Clock is running wLED firmware, which offers a number of different interface options, including HTTP & JSON APIs

  • Must use the provided calendar feed, https://nextcloud.makefixhack.org/remote.php/dav/public-calendars/CrNecAGiRtwrK5Ap/?export gives a .ics calendar subscription file

  • Must provide useful visual feedback on calendar events using the LEDs

  • May provide other use LEDs for other things outside of event times

  • Submissions must be licensed such that MakeFixHack can use and modify as needed

The login information for the clock is located below the clock.

Example behaviors

These are only examples, not requirements. You can choose to get creative or stick to the basics.

Some examples of what the calendar-LED interactions might look like:

  • The LEDs might change color or turn on when an event starts

  • The LEDs might flash or change colors when an event is almost over and it’s time to clean up

Examples of non-event behaviors:

  • How many hours of sunlight remaining
